Lori Miller bio and artist statement

Lori Miller was born and raised in the Quad City area, a group of cities on the upper Mississippi River, bridging Iowa and Illinois. Miller always enjoyed artistic activities, from pencil drawing, sculpture and stained glass work. Working in the advertising and marketing fields for numerous years, Miller developed skills in set design, copywriting and design. Since 1999, Miller has created and developed her own style of contemporary art using fabrics and fiber mediums.I have always been intrigued with doing things a little bit differently. And in my current work with fiber, I’m taking an unexpected approach in creating mosaic works. I work with original drawings and then finish them in a mosaic style, creating a pattern for cutting out each individual piece.

"By using a mosaic technique, I feel I give expression to things I see in the world. Even with all of the world’s imperfection and chaos, I seek out the beauty and grace in the everyday. I believe there will always be an amazing balance between confusion and hope – and I want the viewer to feel that connection through my fragmented images.

Using fiber to create these mosaic images, I am aware of how each piece comes together in a blending of texture, color and form. As I continue to explore this medium, I am delighted to discover new techniques which help communicate my ideas."
